Reasons Why You’re Having a Hard Time Being Mindful and How to Overcome Them

mindfulness problems

Many ask how to practice mindfulness if there are far too many mindfulness problems to overcome. True enough, everyone who traverses into this path experience a lot of challenges along the way. Mindfulness meditation is, after all, a practice that requires so much concentration and freeing of the mind.

Still, the only way out is to tackle these mindfulness problems head-on. Knowing what’s getting on the way is the first step towards addressing each barrier.

7  Mindfulness problems and How to Overcome Them
You are in doubt.

Doubt is almost always present to any practice. This is the first thing that plagues the mind. People can’t help to think about whether something really does help or work. Some think that while it works on others, it may not have any beneficial effect on them.

Doubt isn’t always harmful as some forms can teach you to be more mindful before buying into an idea. However, unhealthy doubt would only lead us away from the potential benefit of a practice. Mindfulness is no different. If you are ever faced with this obstacle, remember that these are just thoughts. Clear your mind and immediately revert back to practicing mindfulness.

Restlessness overtakes you.

The mind is a busy network. Since we were little, we’ve been taught to act- and, if possible, act quickly on matters of life. Thus, it is not surprising how mindfulness meditation can be so difficult even for intermediate and advanced practitioners.

Experts believe that underneath our restless attitude is some type of fear or anxiety. To deal with it, you have to recognize what it is and how it affects you currently. Being able to recognize it gives you the avenue to reduce and eventually get rid of its impact.

There are sources of irritation or distraction around.

Loud outside noises and family problems popping out of your mind while meditating are strong barriers to mindfulness. For some reasons, these irritations and distractions seem more real while you are on the journey.

Instead of drowning yourself, think of these distractions and irritations as opportunities for you to become more in tune with yourself. Remember that these are teachers in disguise. Whenever you challenge them, you grow better each time.

You are sleep deprived.

More often than not, we tend to be sleepy when we start closing our eyes and meditate. You may simply be tired from lack of sleep or from having an overwhelming experience. Whatever is the case, this is the best way on how to practice mindfulness— get yourself some rest.

If sleepiness becomes a constant occurrence, you may need to do things to get back on the driver’s seat. You can splash out some water on your face, open your eyes slightly, or sit in an upright position.

You want to be elsewhere.

Wanting to be somewhere else than where you currently are as you practice mindfulness meditation is an obstacle even for advanced practitioners. It may be that you simply want to go buy something for yourself. On other occasions, you may think that you should better spend your time elsewhere than meditating. This state of mind is also so much connected with restlessness, sleepiness, and other hindrances.

When you experience this obstacle, immediately shift your mind to doing what you can do at the moment than what you cannot. Remember that there is a time for everything. If it continues to happen, perhaps it’s best to evaluate the root cause of the concern. Then, become more aware of this obstacle next time and shift your practice.

You become overly goal-oriented.

Goals are our driving force in life. Without them, life can have no meaning or direction. While goals are essential to an individual, becoming overly attached to a goal can have a detrimental effect. It can lead to frustration, anger, and other negative emotions.

Same is true with mindfulness. When you start thinking of this practice as an everyday goal that has to be met instead of a personal and intimate journey with yourself, you risk your state of mind.

So, how to practice mindfulness without drowning yourself? Simple; do not consider it a goal that you need to chase. Focus on all good things the practice lets you experience while you are at it. Doing this will surely make you much happier and satisfied.

You get disappointed with your progress.

Everybody has experienced wanting to improve or progress on something at a certain pace. However, when you end up not getting to where you want at present, you get that excruciating feeling inside. The truth is; the more you fixate your attention to something, the lesser chance you have at getting it.

Release your focus on improving and just be grateful for your current progress. Remember that mindfulness problems are solved with an ongoing effort. Of course, this means that progress isn’t the same for everybody.

Conclusion

Overcoming mindfulness problems involves understanding that disappointments and failure come from time to time. With all the complexity of our brain and emotions, nobody knows for sure how to practice mindfulness perfectly. There is no such thing in the first place. Don’t be hard on yourself and forgive your shortcomings and just take control of yourself again.
